Amigos de San Pablo is a scholarship fund for middle- and high school students in the Guatemalan village of San Pablo, Tacaná, San Marcos. Located between two 13,000-foot volcanoes in the heart of the Sierra Madre mountain chain, San Pablo is a progressive village dedicated to sustainable farming and hands-on education. The community’s school is a model for the entire western state of San Marcos, and many students walk up to two hours daily to attend classes there.

But schooling is not cheap, not in a region where the average salary hovers around $4 a day. While most parents can afford elementary school, middle school costs around $150/year, and high school is nearly twice as expensive. That's why Brooke Toczylowski and Ian Gordon created Amigos de San Pablo after living in the community throughout 2006—to push back at the high numbers of Guatemalan students who don’t get past elementary school.
